Twisted Lady Socks
1 Skein - Gentle Spirit’s Hand Painted Sock Yarn
Set of 4 dpn US Size 2 or size to obtain gauge.
Marker and Tapestry Needle
18 stitches and 26 rounds equal 2” in stockinette stitch worked in the round.
Leg: Loosely CO 60 sts. Arrange sts on 3dpn so needle 1 and 2 have 18 sts and needle 3 has 24 sts. pm and join working in the round making sure sts are not twisted. Work in K2, P1 rib for 14 rows. Piece should measure about 1 1/4” from beg. Work rnds 1-4 of leg chart 20 times - piece should measure about 7 1/2” from beg.
Heel: K 14 , turn work around, sl 1 pwise wyf, p27 (there will be 28 heel sts centered on the back of the leg and the remaining 32 will be used for working the instep later) Work the 28 heel sts back and forth as follows:’
Row 1: (RS) *sl 1 kwise wyb, k1; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 2: (WS) *sl 1pwise wyf, purl to end of row.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 for a total of 18 times, then work one more row 1 (there should be 18 sl sts on each side of the heel flap and it should measure 2”).
Turn Heel: Work short-rows to shape heel as follows:
Row 1: (WS) Sl 1 pwise wyf, p14, p2tog, p1, turn work.
Row 2: (RS) Sl 1 pwisewyb, k3, ssk, k1 turn work.
Row 3: Sl 1, purl to 1 st before gap formed on the previous row, p2tog (1 st on each side of the gap), p1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, knit to 1 st before gap formed on previous row, ssk (1 st each side of gap), k1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked and 16 sts remain.
Shape Gusset: Pick up sts and rejoin for working in the round as follows:
Rnd 1: With needle 1 (this has the heel sts), pick up and k 19 sts along left edge of heel flap; with needle 2, work 32 insteps sts beginning with row 1 of the instep chart; with needle 3, pick up and knit 19 sts along right edge of heel flap, then knit the first 8 heel sts from needle 1 again (there should be a total of 86 sts, needle 1 - 27sts, needle 2 - 32 instep sts and needle 3 - 27 sts). Rnd begins at center of heel.
Rnd 2: On needle 1 , K8, k tbl 19 times; on needle 2, continue instep pattern from chart; on needle 3, k1 tbl 19 times, k8.
Rnd 3: On needle 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle 2, continue instep pattern from chart; on needle 3, k1, ssk, k to end - 2 sts decreased.
Rnd 4: On needle 1, k; on needle 2, continue instep pattern from chart, needle 3, k.
Repeat rnds 3 and 4 until 60 sts rem (needle 1 - 14 sts, needle 2 - 32 instep sts, needle 3 - 14 sts).
Foot: Continue working even (needle 1 - st st, needle 2 – from instep chart, needle 3 - st st) until foot measures 8 1/2” from heel or 1 1/4” less than desired foot length (length should be measured with foot stretched widthwise due to the stretch associated with the lace pattern).
Toe: K 1 rnd, redistribute sts as follows:
Rnd 1: On needle 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle 2, k, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle 3, k1, ssk, k to end (4 sts decreased).
Rnd 2: Knit
Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until 32 sts remain, work rnd 1 only until 16 sts remain. K 4 sts from needle 1 onto needle 3 - 8 sts each on 2 needles.
Finishing: Cut yarn leaving 14”tail. Use tail to thread a tapestry needle and finish using Kitchener Stitch to join sts. Weave in loose ends. Block lightly to shape.
1. Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit and slip it off the needle.
2. Draw the yarn through the next stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave on the needle.
3. Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl and slip off needle.
4. Draw the yarn through the next stitch on the back needle as if to knit and leave on the needle.
Repeat steps 1 to 4 until all the stitches are off both needles.
