Shape Gusset:  Pick up sts and rejoin for working in the round as follows:

Rnd 1:  With needle 1 (this has the heel sts), pick up and k 19 sts along left edge of heel flap; with needle 2, work 32 insteps sts beginning with row 1 of the instep chart; with needle 3, pick up and knit 19 sts along right edge of heel flap, then knit the first 8 heel sts from needle 1 again (there should be a total of 86 sts, needle 1 - 27sts, needle 2 - 32 instep sts and needle 3 - 27 sts).  Rnd begins at center of heel.

Rnd 2:  On needle 1 , K8, k tbl 19 times; on needle 2, continue instep pattern from chart; on needle 3, k1 tbl 19 times, k8.

Foot:  Continue working even (needle 1 - st st, needle 2 – from instep chart, needle 3 - st st) until foot measures 8 1/2” from heel or 1 1/4” less than desired foot length (length should be measured with foot stretched widthwise due to the stretch associated with the lace pattern).

Rnd 1:  On needle 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle 2, k, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on needle 3, k1, ssk, k to end (4 sts decreased).

Rnd 2:  Knit

Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until 32 sts remain, work rnd 1 only until 16 sts remain.  K 4 sts from needle 1 onto needle 3 - 8 sts each on 2 needles.

Finishing:  Cut yarn leaving 14”tail.  Use tail to thread a tapestry needle and finish using Kitchener Stitch to join sts. Weave in loose ends. Block lightly to shape.

Kitchener Stitch:

1. Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit and slip it off the needle.

2. Draw the yarn through the next stitch on the front needle as if to purl and leave on the needle.

3. Draw the yarn through the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl and slip off needle.

4. Draw the yarn through the next stitch on the back needle as if to knit and leave on the needle.

Repeat steps 1 to 4 until all the stitches are off both needles.
